How To Identify, Avoid & Report Amazon Gift Card Scams in 2026

Gift card scams are everywhere, and the most popular gift cards are often the bait in most scams. Amazon gift cards are popular, very flexible, and useful, making Amazon gift card scams one of the most popular gift card scams out there.

With the right information at hand, knowledge is power. If you understand how gift cards truly work, you should be able to tell when someone is trying to defraud you. You can avoid Amazon gift card scams if you’re able to identify the signs and the different forms they come in.

In this article, I’ll walk you through how you can identify Amazon gift card scams, how to avoid them, and how you can report them to the right authorities.

How To Identify Amazon Gift Card Scams

You can identify Amazon gift card scams once you understand the various forms they come in. Below are some popular forms of Amazon gift card scams you should watch out for:

  1. Phishing scam
  2. Lottery scam
  3. Technical support scam
  4. Online romance scam
  5. Family & friend scam

1. Phishing Scam

Whenever you receive an email that contains a link, do not be in a hurry to click on the link, even after you’ve read the body of the email. You should hover around the link to be sure that it is a secure link and if possible.

A cousin of mine once received an email that appeared to be from Amazon saying that he needed to provide some information to sort out some issues on his account. He clicked the link and was directed to a form. In the form, he was asked to provide the gift card details of the last Amazon gift card he purchased. He shared the details of his gift card, and that’s how he lost his $500 Amazon gift card.

So, always double-check every email and link you receive; it might just be a phishing scam. Also, never share sensitive information online.

2. Lottery Scam

Another form of Amazon gift card scams is a fake lottery. This scam works by making the victim believe that they’ve won a lottery sponsored by Amazon. The scammers might reach out to you via call, text or email and then ask that you buy an Amazon gift card and share the details to redeem your lottery prize.

Example of fake lottery scam requesting for Amazon gift card

Most victims get excited about their winnings from the fake lottery. This makes buying an Amazon gift card usually seem like a small price to pay to claim their winnings. Once the victim purchases the gift card and shares the details, the scammers disappear.

No genuine lottery will ask you to pay a fee to receive your winnings. Once you’re in that situation, you should know it’s a scam.

3. Technical Support Scam

Amazon gift card scams also come in the form of a technical support scam. My friend once got a call from someone claiming to be a customer care representative from Amazon. She was told that her account had been compromised and she had to attend to it fast.

She was asked to pay a fee with an Amazon gift card for the issue to get resolved on the back end. They made her believe that without her payment, Amazon wouldn’t resolve the issue with her account. In a panic, she paid with an Amazon gift card, and that was how she got scammed.

4. Online Romance Scam

The online romance scam is very popular when it comes to gift cards. According to the Federal Trade Commission, about one in four people used a gift card to send money to a romance scammer. You meet someone online, they get close to you, and make you believe they are falling in love with you. Once you get close and comfortable with them, the requests start coming in.

In this case, they will ‘urgently’ ask you for an Amazon gift card to make some purchases, and once you send it to them, that will be the last time you will hear from them.

Online romance scam involving Amazon gift card request

Whenever you meet someone new online and want to start something romantic, ensure you do all the checks you can. Video call them, check their social media, do a reverse search on their photos, and check that the stories they tell you add up. You can never be too careful on the internet.

5. Family & Friend Scam

This is quite similar to the online romance scam except that, in this case, the scammer pretends to be a friend or a relative.

Usually, you receive a text from someone claiming to be a loved one you know. Then they proceed to explain that they’re in a tight situation and need you to send them an Amazon gift card to sort out an issue. Once you send this over, you’ve been scammed.

Before helping anyone out financially, confirm that it is really them asking you for help.

How To Avoid Amazon Gift Card Scams

Knowing how to avoid Amazon gift card scams can save you a lot of money. Below are some tips you should keep in mind to avoid falling victim to Amazon gift card scams:

  1. Scrutinize all emails and links
  2. Watch out for funny gift card requests
  3. Never share your gift card codes
  4. Only reach out to Amazon via the official channels

1. Scrutinize all emails and links

Always check the sender of any email you receive claiming to be from Amazon. Compare the sender details against previous ones that you’ve received. Don’t just look at the sender name and logo and automatically believe it’s genuine.

Also, before you click on any link, check that it is secure. Secure links start with ‘https’.

2. Watch out for funny gift card requests

If you’re asked to send a gift card out or pay for something with a gift card, out of nowhere, it is likely a scam. If someone you just met is already asking you to send them a gift card, chances are that they want to rip you off.

Also, if any company, Amazon or not, asks you to send a gift card before they resolve an issue or to claim a prize, it might be a scam. Watch out.

3. Never share gift card codes

Your Amazon gift card code shouldn’t be shared with anyone. Neither should you upload nor give the details online. Treat your Amazon gift card like you would treat your ATM card.

If someone asks you to share your gift card details, no matter who they claim to be, do not. If anyone makes this request, you should be suspicious and decline.

4. Only reach out to Amazon via the official channels

If you need to resolve an issue or you’re suspicious about something, only reach out to Amazon via its official website. From the website, you can navigate to customer support and lodge your complaint.

Posting about your issue online may attract scammers who pose as Amazon support to you. Before you respond to any messages on social media, check that the Amazon account is verified. If you are unsure, visit the website.

How To Report Amazon Gift Card Scams

If you ever suspect an Amazon gift card scam or fall victim to one, you should report the scam or suspected scam to the right authorities. Reporting a gift card scam not only helps you resolve the issue but also helps other people stay safe and enlightened.

You can report Amazon gift card scams to:

  1. Amazon
  2. Local police
  3. Consumer protection agencies
  4. Scam reporting websites

1. Amazon

You can report a scam or suspected scam by contacting Amazon directly. You can reach out to them via the Amazon website or call their customer support line (1-888-280-4331) to report the details of your experience.

Appropriate action will be taken by the Amazon team, and they will provide you with the support you need.

2. Local police

You can also visit your local police department and report the scam you’ve experienced to them. They can carry out an investigation into the matter and try to track and find the perpetrator(s).

For example, if you’re in the UK, you can report online at www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040. Wherever you are, just make a Google search to find a number to call.

3. Consumer protection agencies

There are consumer protection agencies in countries all over the world. While they might go by different names based on the location, their goal is the same: to protect consumers’ interests.

If you fall victim to a gift card scam, you can report the incident to the consumer protection agency in your location, and they will take it up. If you’re in the U.S., for example, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will take it up.

4. Scam reporting websites

There are websites and platforms dedicated to reporting scams and helping other people stay safe. Platforms like Scamwatch in Nigeria are a good example.

When you share the details of what happened to you, you help other people stay safe and avoid such gift card scams.

Conclusion

When dealing with gift cards, you have to be very careful not to fall victim to a gift card scam. Amazon gift card scams are one of the most common gift card scams out there because of how popular and useful Amazon gift cards are.

By knowing the different forms Amazon gift card scams take, you can identify a scam from a mile away and avoid it. If you take your time to scrutinize emails and links, watch out for funny gift card requests, never share your gift card details, and only reach out to Amazon via the official channels, you’ll be able to avoid Amazon gift card scams.

If you do fall victim to a scam or suspect that a scam is being pulled on you, report it to Amazon, your local police, a consumer protection agency, or a scam reporting website.
